Crawford Stewardship Project Update
October, 2009

It is the mission of Crawford Stewardship Project (CSP) to protect the environment of Crawford County from threats such as those posed by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and to promote sustainable land use, local control of natural resources, and environmental justice.

CAFO Situation: CSP is promoting a request to the DNR for an Environmental Impact Statement for the permitting process for the Roth Feeder Pig operation in southern Crawford County near Wauzeka. We have been following this application closely since its licensing process began with the county and then state. There remain considerable concerns with this application. Please send an email or postcard to the DNR requesting an EIS and CSP letter that points to the concerns in the application. Additional information

Karst Geological Study: We are promoting a karst and soils study of the Driftless area of Wisconsin to protect drinking water from direct flow of contaminants through fractured bedrock. Karst Identification workshops are being held in the county. See list of this summer and fall events.

Public Education: We sponsor and cosponsor educational events in the region on CAFO law, CAFO health and community concerns, political influence of corporate agriculture, karst issues in the Driftless region, bird habitat and natural resources, and films. See list of this summer and fall events.

Water Monitoring: We work with Valley Stewardship Network and the CAFO neighbors to initiate a water monitoring program near the CAFO.

Statewide Networking: We are working with other organizations to have a real effect on much needed changes in the state Livestock Siting Law. Please sign the Petition for substantial changes in the law in the 2010 review.

CSP has won nonprofit status with the state. We operate on a very tight budget, relying on supporters for financial support. Your donations are tax deductable.

"While CAFOs clearly are profitable, they are only profitable because so much of the cost and damage is externalized onto the environment, neighbors and wildlife. The monitoring, supervision, clean-up, restitution, fines are not happening, thus the true cost of CAFOs never find the way onto the balance books." Talking point from the CAFO Conference.
