Karst Identification & Reporting Workshop & Field Trip

On Saturday, October 10, at the City Hall in Prairie du Chien, 214 E. Blackhawk Ave, a karst identification and reporting workshop will begin at 10:00. Bring a bag lunch for noon, and at approximately 12:30 the group will drive to view karst features in the city and see the rock collection of Phil Burgess. This public event is free and cosponsored by the Prairie du Chien Public Library and Crawford Stewardship Project. Coffee and lemonade are provided.

The presentation begins with a power point about karst geology by Dr. Kelvin Rodolfo professor emeritus of University of Illinois-Chicago. The presentation will help people understand what constitutes karst and the importance of our county's geology in how the land is used.

Following the presentation, Dr. Rodolfo will answer questions and lead discussion. He will explain the Wisconsin Geological Survey's Interagency Karst Reporting Form. Landowners may wish to complete the form and submit it for later verification of karst land features. This is one of several steps leading to a karst study of Crawford County. The more information gathered, the more complete and accurate the study will be.

"While CAFOs clearly are profitable, they are only profitable because so much of the cost and damage is externalized onto the environment, neighbors and wildlife. The monitoring, supervision, clean-up, restitution, fines are not happening, thus the true cost of CAFOs never find the way onto the balance books." Talking point from the CAFO Conference.
