Crawford Stewardship Project is grateful for the generous support of the Wisconsin Community Fund.
"CAFOs are only profitable because so much of the cost and damage is externalized onto the environment, neighbors and wildlife. The monitoring, supervision, clean-up, restitution, fines are not happening, thus the true cost of CAFOs never find the way onto the balance books." Talking point from the CAFO Conference.

Local Organizations Host Family Farmer Panel DiscussionAs part of their ongoing local outreach and education programming in support of sustainable farming and environmental justice in Southwestern Wisconsin, the Crawford Stewardship Project and the Gays Mills Library are co-sponsoring an evening with local family farmers. This event includes a panel discussion featuring a diverse selection of local family farmers, a Q&A period, and a short educational film on rotational grazing. It will be held on Tuesday, November 9th from 7:00 p.m. at the Gays Mills Community Building , 212 Main St., Gays Mills, WI. The panel features three local Southwestern WI farmers who will share their sustainable farming practices and experiences running small-scale farming operations. Shana Berg and Al Seelow will speak about their family-run dairy farms and their experiences processing product for Organic Valley. Dan Badtke will share his expertise in farming a diverse array of crops, from pigs and chickens to mushrooms, grains and syrup. After this discussion, the farmers will be available for a Question and Answer period, moderated by Crawford Stewardship Project’s Coordinator, Edie Ehlert. This will be followed by a brief educational film, “Livestock on the Land,” produced as a cooperative effort of Fillmore County in Minnesota and narrated by Crawford County Agriculture Agent Vance Haugen, and information on his farmer grazing training program. Refreshments will be provided. "In hosting this event, we hope to introduce local community members to the farmers who work hard to raise their food. We also hope to initiate conversations and relationships that will serve to raise awareness about successful and sustainable farming practices and increase support for local family farmers," says Jane Holzhauer, coordinator of the event.
