DNR Announces Completion of Crawford County Swine CAFO Permit

In an email to owner AV Roth dated may 29th, DNR Nutrient Management Specialist Andrew Craig sent notice that the Roth Feeder Pig Operation nutrient management plan is complete and in compliance with DNR legal requirements.

In an email to Crawford County, Robert Rohland of the DNR stated he is working on the Environmental Assessment and Wisconsin Pollution Discharge Permit (WPDES) draft. He expects a public hearing on the issue to be in Crawford County in early September. If no further problems are identified, the earliest Permit Issuance would be around October 1st. He said he will be looking for karst features on the Roth land

The Crawford Stewardship Project experts are reviewing the plan and preparing comments for the public hearing in September. Concerned citizens and landowners are encouraged to attend the public hearing and give written and oral comment on the proposal.

"While CAFOs clearly are profitable, they are only profitable because so much of the cost and damage is externalized onto the environment, neighbors and wildlife. The monitoring, supervision, clean-up, restitution, fines are not happening, thus the true cost of CAFOs never find the way onto the balance books." Talking point from the CAFO Conference.
